Member of the Union of artists of the USSR. Honored art worker of the Latvian SSR (1945), Professor.
Born in Riga. He studied at the Latvian Academy of arts (1921-30) in Riga and E. Berdella and A. Hennig ceramic in State vocational school (1932-33) in Bunzlau, Germany (now Boleslawiec, Poland). Lecturer in the school of artistic crafts (1934-40) and at the Academy of arts of the Latvian SSR (since 1944; Vice-rector in 1944-45 and 1947-67, Professor since 1961) in Riga. Creativity K. (predominantly decorative vessels) marked by a sharp looking plastic solutions, new forms and means of decoration (textures, coatings and glazes) associated with material properties and production technology of ceramics.
