Best paintings by Italian artists

The real icons of Italian painting, who radically changed both the trends that dominated medieval art and the tastes of the society, are the four great Italians – da Vinci, BotticelliMichelangelo and Raphael.

The great Leonardo, who devoted all his time to art and science, created drawings of a parachute, a car, a water lifting device, a variety of machines for attacking and sieging fortresses, studied structures of the human body and animals, watched the flight of birds. Da Vinci's profound knowledge, straight eye and firm hand gave the world such masterpieces of painting as Lady with an Ermine, For Our Lady Of The Rocks, Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, as well as his famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

Among the works of Italian artists, Sandro Botticelli's paintings stand out in a special way. They are notable for their bright rich colors, elaborate composition, plasticity of lines and deep sensuality. Nowadays, such Botticelli's paintings as The Birth of Venus, Primavera, The Calumny of Apelles, The Madonna of the Magnificat, The Trials and Calling of Moses, Portrait of a Young Woman and others, adorn the halls of art galleries and museums.

Apart from creating paintings, many famous Italian artists, like Michelangelo Buonarroti, were into sculpture and architecture. His statue of David and the sculptural composition Pietà are known all over the world, just like his fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, while the painting The Creation of Adam is familiar even to those who have little if any interest in art. Michelangelo is also the author of the works The Flood, The Torment of Saint Anthony, The Doni Madonna.

Raphael Santi is an artist who created such works as The Sistine Madonna, The Transfiguration, The Three Graces, The Conestabile Madonna, La Belle Jardinière, frescoes The School of AthensDisputa (The Disputation of the Sacrament) and many others. In 2012, Raphael's drawing Head of a Young Apostle from circa 1519-20 was sold at Sotheby’s auction for £ 29.7 million. So far, this graphic work is the most expensive in the world.

Our selection of paintings by Italian artists also includes works by other renowned painters: Titian, Modigliani, Caravaggio, Veronese, Tintoretto, Giorgione, Perugino, Carracci, Correggio, Gozzolida Messina and others. We invite you on a fascinating journey into the world of Italian art!
