Description of the artwork «The Carrying Of The Cross»

It is one of three paintings of the same name by Hieronymus Bosch. The other two - "carrying the cross" are stored in the museums of Ghent and Vienna (1, 2). Composite of the Madrid "Christ carrying the cross", presented at the Royal Palace, more like Vienna. Here also, the Savior, Biochemy cruel crowd, carries a Tau-shaped cross. On his feet the wooden torture pads, and on his brow a wreath of thorns, but the look turned to the spectator, full of tranquility and high humility. In the distance is the mournful figure of Mary, comfort of the angel, and the idyllic landscape of Brabant, in which many researchers have seen a realistic view of ' s-Hertogenbosch – the hometown of the artist. Another reference to the modernity, the figure of Simon of Cyrene (bearded man in white helping to carry the cross), in whose image, as I assume, Bosch was able to capture the donor – the man who ordered him this picture.
