The gallery exposition consists mainly of portraits of famous Scots - rulers, national heroes, poets, revolutionaries and other historical figures. For example, the gallery features portraits of the poet Robert Burns, actor Sean Connery, philosopher David Hume, writer Walter Scott, Queen Mary Stuart and others.
The gallery building in the neo-Gothic style was built in 1885-1890 according to the design of Robert Rowand Anderson.
