Karel Geirlandt was the man behind the founding, on 8 November 1957, of the ‘Society for the Museum of Contemporary Art’, whose main ambition was to establish an independent museum that focused on contemporary trends in the art world.

Dynamic and unconventional. This describes both Ghent and the Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.). Its permanent collection of first-rate Belgian and international works is presented in constant interaction with original and often provocative exhibitions.
