Description of the artwork «An elderly Ukrainian peasant (Ustim Karmelyuk?)»

The trail of the portrait of Ukrainian hero Ustym karmelyuka among the works of Tropinin – the centenary art quest, which is still suspended because of shortage of prompting. From the main biographer of the artist, Nicholas Ramazanov, we only know one thing: Tropinin did meet with Ukrainian folk avenger and definitely wrote his portrait.

But the quest has expired, Soviet history textbooks and museums needed at least one, albeit apocryphal, portrait of a Ukrainian Robin hood. And the majority of respondents many years ago, old residents of Kamianets-Podilskyi and Kukavka, employees of local museums and art historians agreed to assume Karmelyuka an elderly Ukrainian brush Tropinin. Not surprisingly, the way the artist copied three times, with minor changes (two more versions - 1, 2). Apparently, the meeting with these people was memorable too.

Versions of acquaintance of the artist with the vigilante, running down from prison and from exile, the legendary number of times, too, there are several. On one of them, Tropinin wrote karmelyuka right in the place of confinement, in Kamenets-Podolsk fortress, so that his captors could make a portrait to the court case. In the second version, more plausible, based on the memories of the inhabitants of Kukavka, the artist was introduced to a folk hero, a local doctor who including secretly treating wounded companions karmelyuka.

For a serf of the romantic artist this meeting was a real success. Sec – the elusive defender of the poor, wanted, signs which are known by all the inhabitants of the surrounding villages: "face round, nose medium, hair on the head, mustache and beard, light brown, blue eyes". About it compose songs and legends – only one song "For Sibron sun to go" there are more than 40 variants. His name whispered with hope say the peasants children before bed, his name in horror pass each other the Polish gentry and the Russian nobility, recently taken possession of the Ukrainian lands. They say he's the devil who made the daring escape from the most guarded and impregnable fortress. Saying he's an angel who never leaves himself and all stolen from the masters gives money to the peasants. They say the army karmelyuka, hiding in forests and caves, there are 20 thousand people.

Artist and vigilante could meet approximately 1818 – 1820 – Karmelyuk then it was a little over 30. And this is the main argument, which causes some historians to doubt that in three almost identical portraits tropinina shows that Ustim Karmelyuk. It is very severe looking man with a picture of something past us, with gray (some say) mustache, heavy brow, with a look the old man had lived. But these traits, knowing the history of the life of our hero can take. This man, who had to leave her family, who waited 25 years of military service, who ran away from the lancers, but never was able to return home. He always lived somewhere near must have secretly and with great risk to his own life, sometimes sneaking into your house to hug his wife and watch the sleeping children, but each time had to go into the forest and hide. Nothing strange, a man doomed and rewrite your life could look like a harsh old man in 30 years.
