In 1816-1818 he studied at the Academy of arts in Dresden.
In 1818 he first showed his drawings at the exhibition at the Academy. From 1826 he lived in Dresden, going to other cities in Germany and Belgium (1849, Ostend).
From 1828 he ran a drawing school at Meissen porcelain factory, and in 1836 he was invited to the Dresden Academy of fine arts, where he held the position of Professor and head of the workshop of landscape painting.In 1858 took part in the exhibition "General German art exhibition" in Munich.
From 1836 to 1877 he taught at the Dresden Academy of fine arts.
In 1878, an exhibition of Ludwig Richter in the Berlin National gallery.
Richter died at age 80 in 1884 in Dresden, where he was buried.
(Richter, 1803-1884) was a German painter, draftsman of the illustrations and the engraver first knowledge in art, received in Dresden, from his father, the engraver Karl R., and prepared to be an engraver, but soon switched to painting, which attracted him to her landscape. Even more he famous albums of pictures of his own composition for the children, what: "home", "our father", "Old and new", "our daily Bread", "Baby angel", etc. In all illustrations R., the simplicity and clarity of the composition, the depth of fun, humor and, together with the beauty and depth of feeling. A strong request for these illustrations, which required their reproduction by woodcuts, had a significant impact on the revival in Germany of the art of engraving on wood. R. he was engaged in engraving on copper and produced to 238 prints, among other things, 70 sheets, depicting views of the surrounding area of Dresden.Richter died at age 80 in 1884 in Dresden, where he was buried. Of course, the glory of Caspar Friedrich he could not "beat", but it took a firm place among the most brilliant representatives of the German Biedermeier.
