The artistic career of Gevorg bashinjaghian, the Patriarch of landscape painting in Armenia, spans more than 4 decades. It began in 1880 when his homeland was part of the Russian Empire, and ended with his death in 1925, eight years after the establishment of Soviet government. Gevorg Bashinjaghyan was born on 16 September, in Signakhi, a small town in Eastern Georgia. In 1957, a large group of artists, poets and journalists gathered in Signakhi to mark the centenary of the birth bashinjaghian.
He received his primary education in Tiflis (Tbilisi), and then entered the Academy of fine arts.He studied in St. Petersburg for 4 years (1879-1883), and his teacher was the famous Russian artist Michael Claude. Its formation was influenced by the paintings of Aivazovsky. He traveled extensively in the Caucasus, which found reflection in his paintings. In 1884, Minski travels across Europe, visiting Italy, in particular Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples, where he meets and studies the art of the Italian masters of painting. Then, in 1890, he exhibited in Moscow, Odessa, Novocherkassk, and later, in 1891 in St. Petersburg. In 1899, he visited Paris, France, that also leaves an indelible imprint on the work bashinjaghian.
In fact, the landscapes of Gevork bashinjaghian are the first displays of nature of Armenia in Armenian art. “Birch grove” (1883), “Alazani valley” (1902), “Ararat” (1912), “the Silence” are some of the best paintings of the artist. Interestingly, Bashinjaghyan could not write of nature, as he said that his admiration of nature is so great that interferes with work, and he always came back from the village of untouched canvases. He was also known as the author of stories from the life of Armenians and Georgians.
The artist died on 4 October 1925 and, according to his desire, was buried in Tbilisi next to the Sayat-New.
The rich collections of the artist are in Art Galleries of Armenia, Georgia, the Museum of Oriental art and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
