Biography and information

In 1901 he graduated with honors from the class of theatrical scenery, Central school of technical drawing Stieglitz in St. Petersburg and also specialised in painting glass. He received a scholarship to study abroad. The artist was in Wirzburger, Nirnberga, Rothenburg, etc. In 1902 – 03 years he studied in Munich.

Returning to St. Petersburg E. Vitols was an art teacher in secondary schools, also a decorator of the theatre of Maria and Alexander (1903 – 18).

In exhibitions the artist has participated since 1903.

Personal exhibitions are organized in Riga (1927, 1931, 1942, together with M. Z.), Paris (1933).

E. Vitols was a member of the circle “Rukis”, participated in the society for the encouragement of arts in St. Petersburg (1910 – 16). In 1924 – the 38 years he was a member of the Association “Sadarbs” and since 1946 a member of the Union of artists.

In 1918, the artist moved to Riga. In 1918 – 35 years he was a decorator at the Latvian National Opera, was the technical leader of the workshop scenery. The artist created scenery for the 19 operas and 4 ballets.

In 1922, 32 years, E. Vitols was head of the senior classes of the Latvian Academy of arts, 1946 – 54 years – assistant of the Department of Painting at the Latvian State Academy of arts, 1947 – assistant Professor of Ceramics.

In 1935 – 37 years he ran his Studio.

Also in 1937 – 40 years of the artist was a teacher of drawing and painting in the faculty of Architecture of the University of Latvia.

In 1939 – 41 years was the artist in the candy factory V. cute in 1941 – 44 years – researcher of the Riga city Museum of fine arts.

E. Vitols received a scholarship of Fund of Culture (1923 – 24, 1925). He was also an officer of the order of the Three Stars (1929) and honorary diploma of the Supreme Council of the Latvian SSR (1949).
