Biography and information

In St. Petersburg young Karl attended the Academy of fine arts, where he received a solid Foundation of artistic skills. One time he was a page at the Imperial court, and therefore with high patrons he was able to go to Paris, gradually becoming the centre of European painting. In France, K. Steuben worked in the workshops of David Lefebvre and Gerard. In France and Russia, he became widely known after the Paris Salon (1812) exhibited his painting "Peter the Great in storm on lake Ladoga". Subsequently, a lot of work, K. Steuben painted pictures on subjects from ancient, medieval and Russian history. His paintings differed romantic drama portrayed, was well composed and drawn, distinguished by a striking overlay of colors. For high skill and great contribution to developing friendship of France and Russia, the artist was awarded the French government the title of Baron. In 1843 Karl Steuben received in St. Petersburg the order of the number of images to St. Isaac's Cathedral, on which he worked until 1854. And it was recognition of the great skill of the artist.
