He studied at the art school for children in Kostroma under the guidance of the famous Russian artist N. P. Shleina, who had a great influence on the formation of V. A. Kutilina as a painter.
In 1959 he graduated from the Moscow State Art Institute. V. I. Surikov (faculty P. D. pokarzhevskii, E. P. Efanov, K. M. Maksimov).
In 1979, the artist created the painting "At its doorstep", which made his name known throughout the Union.
Works are kept in the Yaroslavl art Museum, Kostroma Museum of fine arts.

Soviet painter, graphic artist, Member of Union of artists of the USSR (1962), Honored artist of the RSFSR, awarded the silver medal of the Academy of arts of Russia "For contribution to development of domestic art" (1998).
Grew up and was educated among artists. His father, Alexander, was an Illustrator and cartoonist, worked in the newspaper "true North", was a member TO AHR. Already in childhood, Vladimir knew that to be an artist and became a pupil of the first set of children's art school N.P. Slana. Here Mr Kutilin learned the basics of artistic merit under the guidance of a great teacher and a great master N. P. Slana. After the war in 1947 he began his studies at the Kostroma art school.
At the Moscow art Institute. V. I. Surikov, where Vladimir enrolled immediately after school, his first teacher was Professor D. P. Pokarzhevsky, and then he was replaced by Professor E. P. Efanov and K. M. Maksimov. Here he created his first genre composition "Moscow!" (1954).
His thesis "Moscow" on the protection receives a high diploma assessment and exhibited at the VII all-Union exhibition of diploma works of students of art institutes of the USSR issue of 1959.
After graduation, the artist returned to the fire and involved in active creative work. He works on paintings, illustrated books, on the instructions of the newspaper "North truth" makes sketches for correspondence, begins his teaching career at the art school, where he continues to teach.
Almost all of his work on Kostroma and kostroman. Even a simple still life on the background of the Volga. The Russian language in their philosophical views, Kutilin convinced here somewhere, in the Kostroma province - a real life, without deceit and false pleasures . Here "frozen history".
