Painter. Member of the Union of artists of the USSR. People's artist of the Estonian SSR, Professor.

[R. 24.11(7.12).1911, Rucula, now Viljandi region], a Soviet painter, people's artist of the Estonian SSR (1972). He studied at the school of industrial art in Tallinn (1927-30).. Trika and the Higher art school "Pallas" in Tartu (1931-32, 1936-39). He teaches at the Art Institute of the Estonian SSR in Tallinn (1944, Professor since 1965). M. writes themed paintings, dedicated to the struggle for peace, space exploration, as well as still lifes, landscapes. Painting M. peculiar attraction to generalized symbolic images somewhat theatrical staginess is usually two-pronged composition, and the combination of large, sometimes close to monochromatic, decorative colour planes.
