In 1932 Osipov enters the preparatory classes at the Russian Academy of arts, and in 1935 became a student in the painting Department of the Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture.

The war caught Sergei Osipov on graduate course in the A. Osmerkin workshop. Leaving school, he volunteered for the front. He participated in battles near Leningrad. In December 1941 he was seriously wounded and lost a leg. More than a year spent in hospitals being treated. Discharged in 1943 as an invalid of the great Patriotic war. In 1943, returned to classes at the Institute and in December of the same year he graduated. His diploma painting - "Partisans".

In 1945 Osipov worked as a teacher at the Leningrad art College on the street Tauris. From 1946 to 1949 he taught at the art Studio at Palace of culture named after M. Gorky. At the same time since 1944, has worked on contracts with Lenise. In April 1945 he was admitted to the Leningrad Union of artists, the same year he participated in exhibitions. From 1949 until the late 1970-ies Osipov taught in the Department of General painting at the higher school of industrial art behalf of Vera Mukhina, associate Professor. At the same time a lot of work creatively, and painted landscapes, paintings, still lifes.

The work of S. Osipova is inextricably linked with the theme of homeland - Tver land, its nature, ancient Russian cities, the peasant way of life. Annually and often several times he visited Staraya Ladoga, Izborsk, Staritsa, Torzhok, Pskov, brought from these trips numerous studies, sketches and paintings. Then work continued in the workshop. And so year after year for forty years. Your recognizable personal style Osipov gained gradually. By the end of 1950-ies in technical terms, it is well established as a master. This is evidenced by the work of the time. But simply following nature did not satisfy the artist. We need to go further. But how, in what way?

The answer to this question is given by the works of the early 1960-ies. Special value is given to the composition. Increasingly, Osipov did not search for an engaging storyline, then complementing it with his directing, and composing a song, inhabiting it peeped earlier in the nature.

Trip in Pskov, Izborsk has enriched the artist's invaluable lessons of the ancient builders of cathedrals and castles, whose hands and intuition created a rare beauty Bud would live, rough earth walls. Only then he realized that the ravines, hills, ridges, rivers, trees, houses, utensils need to write as structural elements of the spatial environment - the small size of the whole, is actively involved in the education of its features. And then appeared in his landscapes Russian soft melody, clear rhythm, and the unique proportionality, which is unmistakably recognisable national character of the landscape, then there was life, strong "cohesiveness", right alignment, "peterhost", pregnanet of all elements to each other, as fashioned in the log cabin.

Simplifying and sometimes slightly deforming objects, Osipov emphasizes their three-dimensional design and those internal forces, the tension that was created by nature or man. "We need to remind the audience about the hidden energy that filled every thing. For me, - said the artist, - here a stream of poetry, not stories about an action or event". Yes, in his canvases, nothing "happens". But they come alive the traditions, the tastes, the morals of the people, there is a sense of our roots in the revelations of the past life of past generations.Other notable features of his paintings are large Convention forms and the whole composition of the picture, a notable attempt to generalize, the allegory, the desire to escape from the contemplative naturalism to the philosophical depth and some symbols, but not passing the point beyond which painting breaks with the real world.

The style of the works of this period resembles the lightweight "polycubes", form walls and faces. The most common color is purple, purple colours Osipov wrote sky, water, neutral background, the wall of the house, surprisingly accurately conveys the condition. The top artist have in the 1970's - beginning of 1980-ies. During this period he created a number of outstanding works, mainly in the genre of still life and landscape. In the paintings of Sergei Osipov, much like the old Russian masters: conciseness artistic language, the conventionality of forms and balanced composition, ingenuity in the details, the integrity and expressiveness of the image, built on a simple peasant material.

Looking at his still lifes depicting table with simple rustic fare, lively represent him and his contemporaries and ancestors and the early Christians, sharing a modest meal... Everything passes, but will also be on the table a jug of milk, onion and potatoes - the food of the artist and the farmer. In 1983 in Moscow successfully hosted the personal exhibition of works by S. Osipova. To her by the publishing house "Soviet artist", was released catalogue.

Died Osipov in Leningrad in 1985. In 1990, the exhibition of his works was held in the Leningrad Union of artists.
