Finished the workshop of Figurative painting, Latvian Academy of art (1931) with thesis "the Boys at the river" with Professor J. R. Tillberg.

In exhibitions the artist has participated since 1929.

Personal exhibitions are organized in Riga (1942, 1964). Commemorative exhibition – in Riga (1976), the 100th anniversary of devoted to the exhibition in the State Museum of arts in Riga (2001), a retrospective exhibition in the gallery Anthony in Riga (2003).

Ya Rikmanis participated in the Union “Radigars”, “Rosme”, in society Latvijskogo Fine art.

From 1944 he was also a member of the Union of artists.

The artist worked as an assistant in the Department of painting of the Latvian Academy of arts (1945 – 50).
