Joseph Nicephore Niepce (FR. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce 7 March 1765 — 5 July 1833) — French inventor, best known as the discoverer of photography.

Born in Chalon-sur-Saone in Burgundy in an aristocratic family. His father and maternal grandfather were lawyers. In Chalons family had a large estate. Joseph studied at colleges in Chalons, Troyes and Angera from 1780 to 1788 oratory. Although the study had prepared him for a Church career in 1792 he chose to change the direction of enlisting in the revolutionary army. In 1795 he settled in nice and married Agnes Ramer. After 6 years he returns to his hometown for his mother and brothers. Here he begins to deal with his research with his brother Claude. The first invention was pyreolophore — internal combustion engine with which it was possible to move the boat along the Seine. In 1816 he began to work on getting photographic images. Originally used a silver salt which blackens when in contact with daylight. Niepce was able to get negative, however, the release of silver salts from the camera the whole zacharel. Later Niepce tried to use copper, or limestone plate covered with asphalt. For the first time Niepce gets fixed image 1822 — "set table".

In 1829, the 64-year-old Niepce was sick. He and his brother Claude spent all your money received by inheritance, by various inventions, but none of them made them rich. They've never had the need to think about earnings, as the family Niazov was rich, they all received a good education and lived in a luxurious house in Chalon-sur-Saone, where in 1765 he was born Joseph. His father was an adviser to the king, her mother the daughter of a famous lawyer. Joseph showed interest in the invention in boyish years, but studied to become Church officials. In 1792, abandoning the career of a priest, became an army officer and took an active part in the hostilities in Sardinia and in Italy. Poor health forced him to retire and for the next six years he spent in nice as a public official.

He returned home in 1801, to his brother Claude to devote his life to scientific research. Heliography became his main occupation and he gave her all his strength. Died Joseph Niepce in 1833.
