Description of the artwork «Joan of Arc»

Countryman maid of Orleans, bastien-Lepage has portrayed Joan of Arc a national heroine, a simple peasant girl to her parents garden. Before us the time when the saints Jeanne misleading about the role that she was destined to play for his country. That is, the artist deliberately ignored a tempting opportunity to show Joan led troops. Here, her destiny is decided, this is a turning point. The simplicity of the image produced enhances the effect of biofeedback in homespun clothes, in the garden where he spent so many carefree days, she learns of her prescribed role. The whole effect in this natural, cowgirl in front of us, which will only become maid of Orleans. Her image fraught with tension, she listens to the voices. About the role of the destined liberator of France the girl informed the Archangel and the saints, Jeanne does not see them, and we see barely outlined luminous figures hovering behind her, against the family home.

Jeanne herself is very naturalistic, tangible. Fascinating her look – she tensely stares at the opened future, quite different than she met 10 minutes ago.
Ideologist of the Peredvizhniki Vladimir Stasov in the evaluation of "Joan of Arc" bastien-Lepage's really tough. In his opinion, it shows the "insane psychopath". In fairness, how could the image of Joan not contain some level of exaltation? In this case, she would have said to myself "dreaming" and continued to do things around the house. But Elena Polenova their impressions of the world exhibition of 1889, that shows "Joan of Arc", expressed as: "In art one Bastien-Lepage, his Jeanne d'arc and many other wonderful things".

For the first time the public saw the painting at the Paris salon of 1880, and it was acquired by the American Erwin Davis, he later gave the painting to the Metropolitan Museum. The reaction of the French public to the work of the teacher was deeply shocked by Maria Bashkirtseva the most faithful follower of bastien, who was with him until his death (she planned – until his death, but died early). Maria rebuked the critics in that they do not recognize the image of Joan of Arc "a work of sublime art, because he introduced her to us, a peasant and not with the white handles and the equipment".

Under obvious, acknowledged by the author of the influence of "Joan of Arc" Mikhail Nesterov wrote "Vision of young Bartholomew".
