Description of the artwork «The sacred wood cherished by the Arts and the Muses»

The idea of the painting is to show the inseparable connection of Arts and Sciences. In the center of the composition we can see allegorical figures of Painting, Architecture, and Sculpture. Next to them are the muses Polyhymnia (Muse of the solemn hymns), Clio (Muse of history), Calliope (Muse of epic poetry, science and philosophy). On the shore there are Thalia (Muse of comedy and poetry) and Terpsichore (Muse of dance). In the air we can see Euterpe (Muse of lyric poetry and music) and Erato (Muse of love  songs). On the shore of the lake, motionlessly sitting are Melpomene (Muse of tragedy) and Urania (Muse of astronomy). This idyllic landscape is filled with silence and peace.
