Gauguin and Laval in Martinique

Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam presents an exhibition"Gauguin and Laval in Martinique" - the first exhibition devoted to a critical, but still forgotten period in the artistic career of Paul Gauguin: the four months he spent on Martinique in 1887 with Charles Laval. Colorful innovative works created by two friends on the island have had a tremendous impact on their artistic development and future career.
"Gauguin and Laval in Martinique" brings together many paintings, drawings and sketches that two French artists created on the Caribbean island. Many of them are borrowed from private collections and are rarely exhibited or published - if at all they appear in public.
The Van Gogh Museum holds several significant works of Gauguin and Laval of their “island” period. The first acquisitions for this collection were made by Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo back in 1887.
