Galerie Gmurzynska proudly presents
retrospective a sixty-year career as a modernist artist Wifredo Lam.
Today Lam is recognized worldwide as one of the pioneers of modernism in Europe, Asia and Latin America. His achievements were marked by a retrospective in 2014 at Tate Modern in London, then this exposition visited the Pompidou Center in Paris and the National Museum of Queen Sofia in Madrid.
Lama's works unite various cultures, languages, and visual traditions in a symphony of signs, symbols, and meanings. His best paintings synthesize modernist styles of painting with biomorphic forms of animals, people and plants, as well as graphic symbols that often originate from Afro-Cuban images, poetry and religion, ancient Greek and African artifacts.
“He believed in the art of essence, the poetry of forms and colors, which would allow cultures, languages and beliefs to connect and overcome their differences,” writes Dominique de Villepin about Vifredo Lama.
