The first big Canadian retrospective exhibition
Radical Inventor "Alexander Calder (1898 - 1976) presents the work of one of the greatest artists of the XX century.
Calder questioned the artistic conventions and rethought the very nature of drawing and sculpture. He used industrial materials such as steel wire and sheet metal, as well as found objects. Having introduced the fourth dimension to time in the sculpture, he completely transformed the way in which objects enliven space, which opened up a “new opportunity for beauty”. The author has created stationary abstract works, which Jean Arp in 1932 called “Stables” and established himself as a forerunner of the international avant-garde.
The exhibition presents 100 works that illustrate the extensive means of expression of this brilliant artist, ranging from paintings and drawings to wire circus figures, stables from sheet metal, as well as jewelry.
The exhibition is held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Calder Foundation and thanks to the support of the American Art Foundation Terra & Pembroke.
