George Kondo: What's the point?

The Sprüth Magers Gallery presents an exhibition by the contemporary American artist George Kondo under the intriguing title “What's the point?".
The artist studies the portrait genre, drawing inspiration from American caricature, European portrait history, as well as Greek mythology, creating works with black humor in his own recognizable style. Kondo’s painting combines expressionism and cubism with the qualities of satirical caricature. The work of George Kondo includes works from large bronze sculptures and imaginary portraits to "religious" paintings.
The hybrid character of the portraits of George Kondo took a new turn in 2007. The artist created a series of paintings where each of the figures simultaneously expresses many emotions and expressions, such as surprise, cry and laughter. Art critic Donald Kuspit once described the Kondo portraits as “metaphysical mannequins,” and the artist himself coined the term “artificial realism” for his work.
