Yoshitoshi: spirit and spectacle

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi is the last great master of traditional Japanese wood engraving. Always inventive in his art, he responded to the rapid modernization of Japan in the late 1800s with more expressiveness than ever before. His bright, dynamic images served as inspiration for modern manga and anime.
Focusing on both cultural traditions and the upheavals of the modern world, the artist took up a wide range of topics: the heroism of samurai warriors, poetic images of figures in nature, female beauty, historical stories, ghost stories and the horrors of the battlefield.
In thisexhibition about seventy works from the extraordinary collection of Yoshitoshi's engraving museum, the largest repository of his works outside of Japan, are represented.
