Bugro and America
Exhibition February 15 − May 12, 2019
Exhibition "Bugro and America"show more than forty masterpieces of paintings by the French academic artist William Adolf Bouguereau (1825-1905).
The exhibition explores the popularity of the artist during the Golden Age of America, from the late 1860s to the early 1900s. During this period, the possession of a painting by the artist was a requirement for any American who wanted to be considered a serious collector: the artist’s great paintings brought a sense of classic sophistication to new collections. Their chaste sensual virgins, Raphael Madonnas and incredibly untouched peasant children reflect religious beliefs, sexual mores, social problems and desires of that period. In addition, the exhibition provides an opportunity to explore how society’s perspectives may change over time.
Being the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist since the 1980s, "Bugro and America" will offer fresh insights on the works that form the basis of many museum collections.
