Maizelle: Celebrate me home

Exhibition April 13, 2019 − March 29, 2020
Maizelle- An artist, gallery owner and one of the founders of the Norfolk Art Commission, has been a regular member of the Hampton Roads art community for more than four decades.

Raised in Norfolk during the mid-twentieth sociopolitical upheaval, she devoted her impressive career to the evolution of the African-American community. Her work portrays members of her family and actors from her neighborhood around Church Street, the commercial and residential center of African-American Norfolk.

The artist not only depicts such figures as vegetable dealers and musicians, but also documents the legacy of local attractions, such as the Attax Theater, and forgotten social events, such as Queen’s Ball.
