Anarchism and political art, 1885 - 1914

Exhibition October 5 − December 15, 2019
ThisExhibition combines lithographic prints and related graphic materials donated by leading European avant-garde artists in support of the anarchist magazine Les Temps Nouveaux (The New Times), published by writer and activist Jean Grave. Among the authors were such famous artists as the neo-Impressionists Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross.

Organized around social themes and aspirations that determined the policies of the anarchist movement, the exhibition examines such pressing issues as poor working conditions, homelessness, cross-border migration, child abuse among clergy, resistance to war, and a vision of the coming anarchist utopia. ,

Temps Nouveaux artists also advertised their ideals with postcards, brochures, and book illustrations, including ones designed for working-class children. Thus, these artists used graphics as media for their avant-garde experiments, even when they worked, to convey their social meaning to the general public.

Artists: Paul Signac, Theo van Rijsselberg, Henri Edmond Cross.
