Michael Armitage. Promised land

Exhibition June 28, 2019
Australian Museum of Contemporary Art presents Michael Armitage's solo exhibitionPromised land". The exhibition includes the author's latest work, reflecting the recent elections in Kenya, as well as the subsequent political rallies and disagreements.

Michael Armitage was born in Nairobi in 1984. One of the brightest young artists of Kenya. His lush, often large-scale paintings combine the traditions of European modernism with the plots and materials of East Africa. Living and working between Nairobi and London, the author paints in oil on fabrics from the bark of Lubugo - this is culturally significant material of the Buganda people in Uganda. Bark cloth is traditionally used as a shroud or for ceremonies. The artist links together stories from folklore, popular culture and history of East Africa. His paintings are based on the social and political events of his homeland.
