Whistler in watercolor

Exhibition May 18 − October 6, 2019
Freer Gallery in Washington presents an exhibition "Whistler in watercolor".

The founder of the museum, Charles Lang Freer, collected the world's largest collection of Whistler watercolors, which features over fifty seascapes, nocturnes, indoor views and street scenes. His extensive collection also includes prints, drawings, pastels and oil paintings by the artist. At the request of Freer, these works never left the museum, and fragile watercolors are rarely exhibited.

Recent studies by curators, scientists, and museum restorers are now shedding new light on the materials, methods, and artistic genius of Whistler, as seen in this first major exhibition of his watercolors in the Freer Gallery from the 1930s.
