Evan Grusis: Shadow

Exhibition May 7 − September 22, 2019
"Shadow"- An exhibition of works by Evan Grusis, presented in the Pizzuti Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Columbus this summer, reminiscent of the bright commercial graphics of the late eighties.

Saturated with artistic, historical, and pop commercial references, from the 18th century Dutch still life and 1970s abstraction to Patrick Nagel and Kai’s power tools, Grusys’s seductive illusionism is accompanied by a seductive feeling of nostalgia.

Palm trees, plates, geometric shapes and texts of Grusis, devoid of color or filled with twilight shades, are determined by the falling shadows and luminous silhouettes. Soaring in a small picturesque space with logos or advertisements, they also seem stuck somewhere between the artist’s own tender humor and a sense of critical distance. With her fascinating images of almost empty objects, Gruz asks us to think about our own desire to look.
