Gallery of Old Masters Significant works of art such as the Sistine Madonna by Raphael and The Sleeping Venus by Giorgione can be seen at Dresden's state art collections.
The exhibition reflects the taste of Saxon collectors and, therefore, the history of the collection. Many of the works belonged to the Kunstkamera or decorated the king’s chambers before Augustus the Strong created his first art gallery in the palace in 1718.
The gallery has one of the most famous motifs in the history of art: Raphael's "Sistine Madonna" with two angels below. This picture became part of the visual memory, which has long found its own life as a decorative element on umbrellas and fridge magnets.
