One of the oldest paintings exhibited dates back to 1886. This is a picture of Alexander Harmer (1856-1925), depicting the front courtyard of the Mission of San Juan Capistrano. What is now one of the most beautiful gardens in California was then a dry, dusty courtyard, with a few geraniums on the pillars of the arcade.
