The Morgan Library and Museum in New York presents an exhibition: "Sargent: Coal Portraits".
In the midst of his success as a portrait painter, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) impressed the art world, suddenly abandoning oil painting in 1907. For the rest of his life, he created several hundred portraits of people recognized for their achievements in such fields as art, music, literature and theater.
