“Color, rhythm, humor”: books by Joan Miró from the collection of Mark Bashmakov

An exhibition is held at the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage“Color, rhythm, humor”: books by Joan Miró from the collection of Mark Bashmakov ”.

The exposition will include about thirty publications; it will continue the exposition program dedicated to the books of surrealist artists. The main masterpieces of the World Illustrator for the first time in the Hermitage will be shown expanded.

Among the two and a half hundred publications illustrated by Miro, there are books literally cover to cover, and numerous collective collections, catalogs, magazines, including one print of it. In the books of Miro, as well as in all his work, the spontaneity of an artistic gesture is combined with an unexpected methodology at first glance. The artist enthusiastically experimented with printing techniques, witty using any improvised tools and materials. Painter par excellence, he was at the same time a truly book master, thoroughly understanding all the intricacies of the craft. Miro argued that the book should be like a “sculpture carved from marble” - and his best works are built as a thoughtful ensemble, united by a common movement, feeling and rhythm.
