Beyond Realism | Dada and Surrealism
Exhibition April 19 − October 25, 2020
"Beyond Realism“brings together some of Dada’s finest examples of surrealism from the National Gallery of Scotland’s collection of art by artists such as Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. This exhibition provides an opportunity to take a closer look at this world-famous collection.
In more than 40 works by 17 artists, the exhibition explores two main forms of surreal work. The first form is unintentional art based on random effects, such as random labeling and scraping - a type of work practiced by artists such as Juan Miro (1893-1983). The second form is the creation of clearly irrational images that came to mind, especially in a dream, in a realistic style. This route was preferred by artists such as Paul Delvaux (1897–1994), while other artists such as Max Ernst (1891–1976) combined both approaches in their work.
