CELESTIAL LINE

Exhibition June 18 − July 24, 2020

The name of the exhibition is a reference to the cultural tradition of St. Petersburg and its environs as the “Northern Capital”.

It is important for the authors of the project to emphasize the continuity that exists in St. Petersburg with respect to the work of the great colorist Mikhail Matyushin, who lived and worked here, who was characterized by the unity of the instantaneous comprehension of the “horizon ring”, with a new experience of the ethereal purity of color opening up. It was the appeal to this concept that gave the avenues and streets of the historic city center a slight glow even in cloudy weather, when the sky, like a prism, colors the city with mother-of-pearl of a warm-cold spectrum.

The architecture of the great architects of the era of St. Petersburg classicism has always sought to create the harmony of the local color and landscape, to capture it in marble and granite with the help of a harmony of rhythms and proportions, carried by echoes and reflections in water and sky. All these great creations become tuning forks of the enchanted space of the northern capital, merging before our eyes into the unique unity of the sky line of St. Petersburg, and frame the dim northern light into the frame of urban space and time.
