Amezta. The mystery and irony of Spanish surrealism

Exhibition April 12 − September 13, 2020
Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts hosts an exhibition of works by the unique Spanish surrealistVicenta Ameztoya (1946-2001).

The exposition presents the artist's work in the most versatile way - viewers will see about 60 paintings by a prominent representative of the visual arts of the Basque Country: from youthful works of the late 60s of the XX century to paintings by a mature, established author, including paintings bought from private collectors and not previously exhibited.

Along with the artist's paintings, there is a wide selection of works on paper (drawings, prints and posters), collages that combine facts and various documentation: drawing albums, brochures and books. Along with allusions to the culture and modern history of the Basque Country, Ameztoy used elements of various styles in his works, such as Pre-Raphaelite English painting, Italian Quattrocento or Magritte's surrealism.
