Manuel Mathieu. Survival

Exhibition January 28 − March 28, 2021
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) Presents Exhibition “Manuel Mathieu. Survival".

Breathtaking paintings by Montreal-based Haitian-born Manuel Mathieu immerse viewers in a world of contrasts, tension and poetry. The exhibition brings together over twenty paintings that have never been shown in Canada before. The exhibition also features an installation created specifically for MMFA, which gradually reveals the artist's roots and memories.

A prolific multidisciplinary artist and 2020 Sobey Art Award winner, Mathieu's work is fueled by his life experiences. Some of the works reflect insights gained during two periods of recovery from serious accidents in London and Montreal. Forced to “slow down,” Mathieu argues that these periods of a kind of physical “confinement” allowed him to grow up, to become imbued with his feelings and, therefore, to better understand his place in the world and the importance of preserving the imagination of his home country.
