The State Tretyakov Gallery in the halls of the New Tretyakov Gallery presents an exhibition project
“Laboratory of the Future. Kinetic Art in Russia ".
The exhibition is dedicated to one of the most significant and, at the same time, the least studied direction in the history of Russian art in the second half of the twentieth century. The exhibition, which includes about 400 works, demonstrates a broad panorama of the development of kinetic art in the 1960-1970s, tracing its connection with the avant-garde experiments of the beginning of the century and the artistic practices of our time.
Kinetic art is based on the idea of transformation: both the artistic form and the process of perception itself. Mobility, variability, instability are defining qualities for dynamic works, the transformation of which occurs with the help of mechanical forces or visual effects. The exposition at the New Tretyakov Gallery includes various forms and genres of kinetic art: mobiles, self-tensioned structures, transforming sculptures, optical painting, graphics, collage, photography, video projections, sound and light installations, and interactive objects. Presented are the works of famous kinetic artists who created the main complex of works in the 1960-1970s, and their predecessors - the main representatives of the Russian avant-garde of the early XX century, as well as contemporary authors.
