The State Russian Museum in the halls of the Mikhailovsky Palace is holding an exhibition
“Pavel Zhukovsky. To the 175th birthday anniversary ".
The exhibition presents paintings and graphic works by Pavel Zhukovsky from the collection of the State Russian Museum.
Artist Pavel Vasilyevich Zhukovsky (1845-1912) was the son of the great Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky and the daughter of the German painter Gerhard von Reitern. In the last third of the 19th century, Pavel Zhukovsky was known in social and cultural circles. Due to the proximity to the Imperial Court, he did a lot for the development of art education and museum business in Russia. In addition, Zhukovsky was friends with many prominent people of his time, including Emperor Alexander III, writer Ivan Turgenev and composer Richard Wagner, having performed sketches of scenery and costumes for the first production of Wagner's opera Parsifal. The works of Pavel Zhukovsky bear the stamp of passion for painting of the Italian Renaissance, religious and antique themes. Their execution and imaginative solution make it possible to attribute the artist's work to the academic branch of late European romanticism and symbolism.
