Bacchanalia. Dionysus and his retinue

Exhibition July 5, 2021 − January 15, 2022
The State Museum of the History of Religion in St. Petersburg holds an exhibition "Bacchanalia. Dionysus and His Retinue".

The exhibition features exhibits dedicated to one of the most ancient gods of the ancient world - Dionysus (Bacchus, Bacchus) and his entourage.

Many famous masters of the Renaissance and subsequent eras passionately portray Bacchus and his entourage. He appears as a beautiful young man like Michelangelo and Caravaggio, or as an elderly stout man like Rubens. Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Velázquez and many others have also paid tribute to this theme. Of particular interest among the exhibits are antique vessels from Attica and the Northern Black Sea region for wine and drinking.
