Bellotto. The reunion of the Königstein species

Exhibition August 15 − October 31, 2021
The National Gallery of London presents an exhibition "Bellotto. The Reunion of Koenigstein's Views".

The exhibition brought together five monumental canvases by Italian landscape master Bernardo Bellotto with views of the Saxon fortress of Königstein, located in the picturesque Elbe Valley.

Painted at the height of Bellotto's career, when he was court painter to Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, these views were commissioned as part of a large series of 30 views of Dresden and its surroundings. The paintings depict the ancient fortress both outside and inside. Bellotto managed to capture the drama and details of this majestic place on canvases more than two meters wide. Step back and you can see the sharp angular shapes of the fortress, but look closely and you can make out crumbling stone walls, tiny soldiers on the ramparts, and women hanging laundry in the courtyard.
