Close-up

Exhibition September 19, 2021 − January 2, 2022
The Beyeler Foundation invites you to visit the exhibition "Close-up.".

The project features works by women artists who have occupied a prominent place in the history of modern art from 1870 to the present day, including Berta Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Paula Moderson-Becker, Lotte Lazerstein, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neal, Marlene Dumas, Cindy Sherman and Elizabeth Payton.

The exhibition focuses on the artists' gaze, on their personal vision of their surroundings, which finds expression in self-portraits and portraits of others. From a synoptic perspective, it becomes possible to see how the authors' view of their subject has changed from 1870 to the present. It was in the second half of the nineteenth century that women artists in Europe and America were able to make their first significant contributions to the professional art world.
