The ABC of a Masterpiece

Exhibition December 18, 2021 − June 19, 2022
The New Jerusalem Museum opened the most ambitious exhibition project in all the years of the museum's existence "The ABC of a Masterpiece.".

The 2,000-square-meter exhibition features 123 works by 81 artists, including Kazimir Malevich, Vasily Kandinsky, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Alexander Deineka, Valentin Serov, Zinaida Serebryakova, Ivan Aivazovsky, Aristarkh Lentulov, Natalia Goncharova and about 70 other authors. Among the iconic exhibits of the exhibition are "Merchant's Woman" and "Russian Venus" by Boris Kustodiev, "Kosar" by Kazimir Malevich, "Katsapskaya Venus" by Mikhail Larionov, "Old Mill" by Vasily Polenov, "Improvisation № 209" by Vasily Kandinsky, "Sunset" by Arkhip Quindzhi and others.

The exhibition space is built around thirty-three letters of the Russian alphabet, each of which unites works by different authors, periods and eras. The alphabet is a natural navigation through the exhibition, leading viewers through the halls. Each letter is a thematic section of the exhibition - it gives rise to a word around which the main narrative is built, and opens one of the thirty-three chapters of the narrative.

The works for the exhibition were provided by 30 Russian regional museums from 29 cities, including the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, Primorsky State Picture Gallery, Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, Kaliningrad Regional Museum of Fine Arts, Tula Museum of Fine Arts and others.

Prepared according to the ICS website "New Jerusalem.".
