National Gallery, Prague in the halls of the Schwarzenberg Palace presents the exhibition
"Engravings with Pedigree: Treasures from Vintage Engravings Collections".
The exhibit introduces visitors to the history of print collecting over the centuries, demonstrating how connoisseurs of black and white art obtained the prints and how they were cared for. Rare collector's albums from the early Modern, 19th, and 20th centuries, which have never been shown to the public before and are usually exhibited only on exceptional occasions, are especially highlighted.
The rudiments of print collections emerged during the Renaissance, when erudite rulers, nobles, and scholars were among the first collectors. Collections were often kept in libraries, pasted into albums or left as separate sheets. Prints were also purchased in large quantities by artists, serving as models and sources of inspiration in their studios.
