On February 5, as part of the "Holy Countenances" exhibition series Primorsky Art Gallery presents the icon "Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary" from the collection.
The iconography of the Praise of the Mother of God is based on the text of the Canon to the Prophets, written in the eighth century by Patriarch Herman of Constantinople. The hymns within the canon state that Our Lady is exalted above all the prophets who proclaimed Her in allegorical form. The main theme of this composition is the glorification of Our Lady who served the incarnation of Jesus Christ foretold by the prophets. The earliest known image of the Laudation of the Mother of God in Russian art is an icon of the Laudation of the Mother of God with the Akathist from the Assumption Cathedral at the Moscow Kremlin, painted by a Greek master in the second half of the 14th century. By the mid-15th century Russian art had finally developed a variant of the iconography of the Praise of the Mother of God to which, with some variations, corresponds an icon from the collection of the Primorsky Picture Gallery.
The balanced composition in which the prophets are located in a close group, the bright coloring with the predominance of ochre, vermilion, whitewash and gold, the personal writing, executed with close in tone sankir and staining, with whitewashing motifs - these features of the icon allow us to refer it to the works of Nevyansk icon painting of the late XVIII century.
The feast of the Praise of the Theotokos is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on the Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent. Another name of the feast is the Saturday of the Akathist, because the Akathist of the Mother of God is sung at the Divine Liturgy on this day.
