Supernatural America: The Paranormal in American Art
Exhibition February 19 − May 15, 2022
Minneapolis Institute of Arts hosts exhibition "Supernatural America: Paranormal Phenomena in American Art".
The exhibition includes more than 200 works by artists working from the early 19th century to the present day: paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, furniture, scientific instruments, and cult paraphernalia.
The project explores the works of art that have shaped the collective view of the paranormal and supernatural, and asks why America is "haunted." Artists were integral to the visualization of these apparitions, whether national or personal, exploring and representing all things mysterious and unexplained. A wide range of authors dealt with this subject, which often grew out of their personal experiences, religious practices and scholarly pursuits. From Native American spiritual traditions to the Salem witch trials and Afrofuturism, the exhibition traces the country's complex and varied "relationship" with the otherworld.
