"Ascension Day. Exhibition of one icon

Exhibition May 24 − June 26, 2022
From May 24 to June 26, the Primorsky State Picture Gallery presents the icon "Ascension", painted in baroque style at the end of the XVIII century. The exhibition of a masterpiece of ancient Russian art is timed to the celebration by the Orthodox Church of the event of the Ascension of the Lord, which this year is June 2.
In the biblical book of the Acts of the Apostles, the period of communion of Jesus Christ with His disciples after the miracle of His resurrection from the dead is defined as 40 days, which corresponds to other 40-day periods in the Lord's earthly life. Therefore, the Ascension is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter. After ascending into heaven, Jesus Christ did not leave the world, but He sent the Holy Spirit.
The Ascension icon exhibition is yet another show in the "Holy Countenances" series of exhibitions, which aims to introduce gallery visitors to a very significant and important cultural, historical, and artistic phenomenon - Russian icons - in all the diversity of its spiritual traditions.
The icon is presented in the Hall of Old Russian paintings in the permanent exhibition "Russian Art. From Icon to Avant-garde".
