"The technical world ... guts man like a chicken, freeing him from all inner life and reducing him to the absolutely external," Gilles Deleuze remarked in one of his early articles. Keeping one's inner world intact, returning to its source and regaining the dignity it has lost is a very important task for every creative person - all the more so for the artist who ascends from plein air as the frame of his work and from landscape as its conventionally defined genre to the much less defined in terms of the outer world, but ultimately more real, the world of the quiet joys of contemplation - a realibus ad realiora, to use a term favored by the geniuses of symbolism. The style and plasticity of light help them to do this by overcoming their detachment from the viewer and immersing him in the space of ideas and intuitions whose fullness is so evident through the fabric of their paintings.
