A graduate of the Academy of arts from 1785 to 1800 g. In 1799, added to the landscape engraving class; in 1800, the title of artist XIV class. In 1808 – academician; in 1830 – Advisor to the Academy of fine arts and managing the landscape engraving class; in 1831 – Professor of degree 3; in 1851 – the title of Professor Emeritus on the part of engraving on copper. Engraved by Galaktionova over 200 prints. In addition to printmaking and painting, he studied lithography, and in 1823 began to publish the sheets "Lithography school of rural types". While studying in St. Petersburg Academy of arts (1785), S. F. Galaktionov specialized in landscape painting. But a painter he never became, and the last years of study gave engraving-landscape class. In 1800, having received the diploma of the 1st degree, started a landscape engraving, first together with his teacher I. S. Klauberi, then their own, and soon acquired a reputation as a master in this art form. He worked mainly in technology of copperplate engraving in combination with etching; in the early 1820s was one of the first in Russia mastered the technique of lithography. Writing one picture - "a lapidary factory in Peterhof" (1808), - Galaktionov received the title of academician, but more to painting is not addressed. In 1817 he began teaching at the AH copperplate engraving in 1831, he became Professor 3rd degree, and in 1850 - Professor Emeritus.
Galaktionov, performing his first illustrations to A. S. Pushkin's poem the fountain of Bakhchisarai (1827), illustrations for the Ivan Krylov's fables (1815, 1825), engravings for the Atlas "around the world" I. Krusenstern (1807-12). In addition, it owns prints adorning both editions (1833, 1834), the famous almanac "Housewarming", is devoted to moving bookstores of A. F. Smirdin to new premises. Over time, the engravings began to lose popularity, for the lithography - equipment more universal and widespread. Galaktionov and mastered it: in the early 1820s he performed the beautiful scenery for "the Collection of views of St. Petersburg and its environs". He was not an outstanding painter, but he loved his profession and is possessed by it; it works by encouraging the care and beauty of finish, and where it was needed - and documentary accuracy. He worked until his death.
