Born in 1916 in Yekaterinoslav. In September 1933 he joined the art Department of the Moscow polygraphic Institute. 28.12.1933 g. he was arrested together with a group of students. Accused of participating in a counterrevolutionary terrorist group, "Blue Lily". Convicted by a Troika of the OGPU of the Moscow region. as a juvenile to 2 years in labor camp. He served in the temnikovsky camp, St. Potma. At first, he worked in the logging, then in an art workshop led by artist V. M. Essen. Released for tests in 1935 he Returned to Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow state art Institute (1942). Member of the Union of artists since 1942, he participated in art exhibitions in Moscow. In 1956, rehabilitated.

In 1942 he graduated from the Moscow art Institute in the Studio of G. G. Ryazhsky. Participant of exhibitions from 1942 (Moscow). Veteran and author of thematic paintings devoted to the great Patriotic war. One of the brightest representatives of socialist realism. From 1961 he taught at the Moscow pedagogical Institute. Member of the Union of artists since 1942.

Rostislav Gorelova works are kept in the Moscow history Museum, the museums of Yaroslavl, Volgograd, Ulyanovsk, Perm and other collections in Russia, Germany, France, Italy, England.
