Born in the town of Gorodnya of Chernihiv region. He studied at art school im. T. Shevchenko in Kiev, then in KHI (1947 – 1953) in A. Shovkunenko, S. Grigorieva, K. Yeleva. In 1973, he headed the Studio of easel painting KHI, 1973 – 1985 – the rector of KHI, since 1979 – Professor. A member of the CFS, in 1983 – 1989 – Chairman of the Board of CFS. Academician AI of Ukraine, people's artist of Ukraine since 1964, corresponding member of the USSR AI since 1975, winner of the National prize of Ukraine. T. Shevchenko since 1980. He was awarded many state awards, including orders of Lenin, Labour red banner, "For merits" I degrees. Honored art worker of Poland. In 2007 the decree of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin awarded a medal to them. Pushkin for his great contribution to the rapprochement and mutual enrichment of cultures and peoples.
